Jana Laslavíková will give a lecture entitled Theatre as a Place and Instrument of Social Change in the "Long" 19th Century: the Case of the Municipal Theatre in Pressburg at the Scientific Forum of the Institute for Musicology of the HUN-REN RCH .
The presentation contributes to the current academic debate on the need for a cultural shift in the humanities, particularly in the field of (musical) theatre historiography. Drawing on the work of European cultural historians, it examines theater history in light of recent research trends, that offer valuable tools for identifying key elements of the transformation of Central and Eastern European society in the given period “in theater and through theater.” The municipal theatre of Pressburg is analysed as an institution from political, economic, and sociological perspectives, while also previously unexplored dimensions of theatre culture are brought into focus. Innovative theoretical frameworks are applied to reinterpret well-known phenomena.
